MosquitoControlThe more I educate myself about DEET and other chemicals, the more I’m convinced I have to be proactive about finding better alternatives. (If you’re new to the DEET issue, you might be interested in reading this…) I try to treat my skin with the respect it deserves as it performs the difficult job of protecting my insides. Thank goodness I have discovered the power of essential oils and their ability to deter bugs!  Scroll down to find my DIY Mosquito Repellent Recipe that you can make for your family or you can visit my Etsy shop to purchase it from me directly.

Before you get desperate and spray on commercial bug sprays (that may contain some nasty chemicals), take some time to consider the better alternative; a natural bug repellent that smells wonderful, is effective, and takes only minutes to whip up.  Here is a great article discussing the effectiveness of Citronella & other Essential Oils: Efficacy of the botanical repellents geraniol, linalool, and citronella against mosquitoes

Different oils repel different bugs, so it’s best to use a combination of essential oils to ward off several types of biters. Don’t let a fear of being eaten alive keep you inside this season. Instead, invest in a few hard-hitting essential oils and test out this natural alternative to chemical sprays.

Plants and bugs have a love-hate relationship.  On one hand, plants need certain insects for pollination. On the other hand, some insects really cause the plant harm.  Some plants are better than others at creating their own natural bug repellents.

When it comes to outdoor protection, no defense is better than Mother Nature’s offerings. Among these are essential oils which provide a vapor barrier for plants, protecting them from potential threats in their environment. Repellent Blend contains powerful essential oils and other plant oils known to provide outdoor protection in a natural, safe way. This newly updated formula contains a select blend of essential oils including Ylang Ylang, Cedarwood, Catnip, Lemon Eucalyptus, Litsea, Arborvitae, Nootka, and Vanilla Bean Absolute—all of which possess specific chemical compounds known to protect against environmental annoyances. The addition of Tamanu oil provides added support and through doTERRA’s Co-Impact Sourcing®, the harvesting of Tamanu oil is positively affecting the livelihood of harvesters in Madagascar. Repellent Outdoor Blend is a powerful yet safe formula that can be used by every member of the family, outdoors and throughout the home.

Although I love the Repellent Blend, some people have reported that it is just not enough of a repellent for their body chemistry.  So I added Lemongrass and Citronella Essential Oils to my recipe.  I’m sure it’s over kill, but I would hate to provide you with a remedy that doesn’t work.

While citronella oil helps prevent mosquito bites, it does not kill mosquitoes. It only repels these insects by blocking the scent that attracts these bugs, causing them to become disoriented.

Pure citronella essential oil should never be used directly on your skin, as this may cause sensitivities. It should be mixed with a carrier oil, like olive or coconut oil. Once diluted, citronella oil can also be inhaled. Just place a few drops onto a cloth or tissue, or using a diffuser.

Citronella oil is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The EPA also considers oil of citronella safe, as it has very little or no toxicities. If ingested, the major compounds of citronella are eliminated through urination.

As I said earlier, avoid using pure citronella oil on your skin. Not only can this oil cause skin irritations or allergic reactions in people with sensitivities, it has been found to raise heart rate in some individuals.

Pregnant women should be careful with using citronella oil, as their skin is extra sensitive during those nine months. One research study found that there was a loss of spontaneous contractions in the uterus upon the in vitro use of citronella oil. While citronella may be used cautiously as a fragrance during this time, it is important to consult a physician first.

Also, citronella oil should not be used on babies and young children due to their delicate skin. Parents should also be careful when administering the oil near the noses of children.  Seek the advice of your pediatrician before using citronella oil on your children.

When making Bug Spray for use by pregnant women or babies and young children I would suggest replacing the Citronella Oil with CedarWood Essential Oil instead.

DIY Mosquito Repellent

20 drops Repellent Blend

20 drops LemonGrass

20 drops Citronella

15 drops CedarWood

5 drops Juniper Berry

5 drops Patchouli

5 drops Lavender

2 tsp. Witch Hazel

1 tsp. Vitamin E Oil

Distilled Water

Just blend all your ingredients together in a 4 oz (120 ml) glass spray bottle. Shake it gently, then spray it.

If you tend to get bit a lot, this blend is a must-have! Just be ready to pass it around when everyone else asks to use it, too.

Do not spray directly on faces. Instead, spray in your hands and then rub onto your face, avoiding your eyes and mouth. You never want to get it in your eyes as it will burn!  If that does happen, use any type of vegetable oil to gently pull it out of your eyes.  Rinsing with water will only serve to drive the oil in deeper!

You can also make this blend into an Essential Oil candle as well.  I love making candles with my Essential Oils!
